This tour will take in the highlights of the Vatican Museums, one of the most important museums in the world for the number and the quality of the works of art displayed in its beautifully decorated rooms and galleries, including the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s admirable frescoes and for being the place of the “conclave”, the election of the pope. The visit of the museums can be combined with that of Saint Peter’s Square, surrounded by the beautiful colonnades by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the theatre of the pope’s public audiences, and that of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the largest church of the world, which was built for the first time under emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD. In 1506 pope Julius II gave the order to rebuild it completely. It houses masterpieces like Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s “Baldacchino”. The dome, or “cupolone”, started by a 73-year-old Michelangelo,  is still one of the symbols of the eternal city. (Duration 3 or 4 hours, tickets need to be reserved.)
