Castle Sant'Angelo

The tour of this imposing monument known as „Castle Sant’Angelo “ is certainly a trip into the history of Rome, as it was built in the II century AD, not to be a castle at all, but to become the tomb of emperor Hadrian and other members of the imperial family. Only during the Middle Ages, it was transformed into a fortress on behalf of the popes who used it as their refuge in times of war as well as a prison. We will start our tour from the bridge “Ponte Sant’Angelo”, which was originally built to link Hadrian’s mausoleum to the left bank of the river. Exploring the various levels of the monument we will understand its historical transformation from a place of burial into a castle. The visit of this amazing structure includes the incredible 360° view across the city from the terrace on the top (Duration 3 hours, tickets required.)
